50/50 Women on Boards is an organization that tracks, analyzes, and publishes the gender composition of corporate boards in the Russell 3000 Index, representing 99% of all incorporated equity securities in the U.S. Research shows that out of the 2982 Russell 3000 companies nationwide, only 5% have gender-balanced boards. Recognizing the significant gap, their new campaign, 50/50 Women on Boards, advocates for gender-balanced boards.

In 2011, Elise Wetzel and her husband, Rick Wetzel, a co-founder of Wetzel’s Pretzels, were in line at a Chipotle to grab a quick lunch during rush hour. That’s when a light bulb went off in her head: the idea that a fast-casual, create-your-own pizza restaurant with an assembly line could work. She grabbed a napkin and sketched out her ideas with Rick, which led to the beginning of one of the fastest-growing franchise pizza restaurants in the world, Blaze Fast Fire’d Pizza. Elise sheds light on her experience as a successful entrepreneur and brand marketer, having learned her skills in consumer behavior during her time at Northwestern. She shares the importance of team inclusivity, adaptability, and brand awareness.

Patti Solis Doyle’s career began when she joined Richard Daley’s campaign for the Mayor of Chicago, which led to a stable job at Chicago City Hall. In 1991, she took a leap of faith and quit her job to join a presidential campaign for the Governor of Arkansas, Bill Clinton, who became the 42nd President of the United States. Patti served as a senior advisor to Hillary Clinton throughout the campaign and President Clinton’s two terms in the White House.

 

In 2007, Patti became the first Latina to lead a presidential campaign for Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential run. She went on to serve as chief of staff for then-Democratic vice presidential nominee, Joe Biden, and as an advisor to the 2012 Obama-Biden presidential campaign. A proud daughter of immigrant parents from Mexico, Patti reflects on growing up on Chicago’s South Side and the rise of women of color in politics. She serves as a director at large on the NAA Board of Directors.

Lori Hall and Jessica Lane were tired of not seeing enough strong multicultural marketing agencies that genuinely captured cultural nuances for the right audiences. They came across way too many out-of-touch campaigns that failed miserably. That’s when they decided it was time to start an agency of their own.

 

Pop’N Creative is a successful Black-owned, women-led multicultural marketing agency, born out of a deep desire to see brands win in marketing to a multicultural world. These two changemakers share how they started a growing business at the beginning of the pandemic, how to avoid common mistakes marketers make, and how one can find their voice as an activist to dismantle racism within various industries.
