Northwestern Alumni Nominated for Tony Awards

The 75th Annual Tony Awards nominations were announced May 9, 2022, and several members of the Northwestern community were recognized for their work in theater this year.

The following members received nominations or worked on shows that were nominated:

  • Masi Asare, assistant professor at the School of Communication, was nominated for Best Original Score for her and cowriter Nathan Tysen’s lyrics for Paradise Square, which was nominated for Best Musical.
  • Northwestern alum Selina Fillinger wrote POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive, which nabbed nominations for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play and Best Scenic Design of a Play.
  • Company was nominated for Best Revival of a Musical. The show features alum Katrina Lenk as the lead character Bobbie. Alum George Furth wrote the original book for Company, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
  • Anna D. Shapiro, the Marjorie Hoffman Hagan, Class of 1934 professor at the School of Communication, was the director of The Minutes, which was nominated for Best Play. Northwestern alumni Ana Kuzmanic and Sally Murphy also worked on the show, with Kuzmanic as the costumer designer and Murphy in the role of Ms. Matz.
  • Barbara Whitman, a proud Northwestern parent, was a producer for A Strange Loop, which was also nominated for Best Musical. Michael R. Jackson, who was the 2020–21 School of Communication Hope Abelson artist-in-residence, wrote the book for the musical.
