Edwin Pokisa ’25
What have you been up to since graduation?
Since graduating, I have been working as a fellow through Northwestern’s Public Interest Program (NUPIP) at the Cook County Bureau of Economic Development. My work combines data analysis, research, and program evaluation to support community and economic development initiatives across Cook County. It's been rewarding to see how data can inform policy decisions and improve public services. The fellowship has also given me the opportunity to learn from dedicated public servants while continuing to grow professionally. Outside of work, I’ve stayed active through Chicago Sport & Social Club’s soccer league, which has been a great way to meet new people and build community after college.
What made the biggest impact on your life at Northwestern?
I’m especially grateful to my academic advisers, professors, mentors, and the Student Enrichment Services team, whose support through Summer Academic Workshop, the Compass mentorship program, and the Beacon Scholars (previously the Knight Scholars) program made navigating Northwestern as a first-generation, low-income student much less daunting.
I’m also thankful to the staff in the Office of Fellowships, Career Advancement Office, and NUPIP. Finally, the Association of Kenyan Students, the African Students Association, intramural soccer, and the NU World Cup, which gave me a community that truly made Northwestern feel like home.
What advice would you give recent graduates as they prepare for life after Northwestern?
Embrace change. Graduation is exciting, but it’s also a season of uncertainty. Your routines, friendships, and surroundings will evolve, and that is okay. Give yourself some grace as you adjust through these changes. Also, as you navigate this new chapter, invest in community. Stay connected with the friends who supported you at Northwestern but also be intentional about building relationships wherever you go next. Just as importantly, continue making time for the things that bring you joy and remain open to discovering new interests and opportunities. Some of the most meaningful experiences in life come from saying yes to something unfamiliar. Last but not least, always: Go ’Cats!
